SnowChubWith winter fast approaching many anglers will choose to hang up their rods and sit it out until the sun starts to shine with some kind of warmth again.

This can be a big mistake. Winter fishing can, and has for me offered some of the best sport of the year. Clothing is not like it used to be in Mr. Crabtree’s day, and with some time spent picking out the correct gear, much of what you can buy today will be a sound investment – keeping you warm and dry for years on the bank.

If you are unsure of what to fish for on a cold, frosty or snowy day there is one fish you can almost guarantee a bite from; the Chub.

By far my most favourite of all fish species, the chub has a big place in my heart, and catching them in the winter is unbeatable. Chub never seem to become inactive. If it’s snowing, they feed. If it’s dark with a hard frost, they feed. Almost all traditional and modern baits will work.

I tend to find fishing with stinky baits works best if there is colour in the water. However, if you have clear crisp water and you can get the fish in competition for the food, then almost anything will work.

So if you’re a carp fisherman or you do already fish the rivers, then make sure you find some time this winter for a river near you. Wrap up warm, have a good selection of baits to hand,  and hit those cold winter mornings hard.

I guarantee you won’t regret it.
