ChubMeatFollowing the great success of fish for a fiver, Mr Crabtree set my second challenge and it was to do exactly that – fish for a fiver. The rules are simple. I can use all my current tackle, but everything else, including travel to the water, had to be done for a fiver or less!

The first thing I had to do was find some local free water. The easiest way for me, or anyone else for that matter, to do this is simply to ask. Tackle shops, fishing friends, club members will point you in the right direction.

My mate, and local match ace, Paul Beasley pointed me in the direction of some free water on the river Arrow just a couple of miles from my door. This was good news, I knew I could drive this and still stay well within my £5 budget.

With about £4 left for bait, I decided on a pint of mixed maggot, (£2.50), a tin of luncheon meat (£1.50), and of course some lob worms dug from my own garden (free).

On arrival at the water I decided to fish a small backwater at my feet for silver fish on the maggot and my quiver tip on the meat out in the flow. The worms were a back-up or for a bonus perch after all the wrigglers had gone.

What you will tend to find with most free water, especially rivers is that they are rarely fished, if at all.

SilverFish

A couple of hours later I had a quality bag of silver fish including, Dace, Roach and some Chub. I only had one fish on the meat, but it was a good Chub nonetheless.

So there you have it. It is easily possible to fish for a fiver or less if you put some thought into it. I could indeed have done it for a lot less, no meat and maybe cycled to the swim it would have cost me half that.

Give it a go, you might be surprised!
