Fish for a FiverEd’s note: We’ve been getting to know Peter via Twitter  – he’s @troutmayfly – and we were delighted when he lined up to accept the Crabtree Challenge to Fish for a Fiver.  Here’s his story of how he and his grandson Noah aced it…

Fish for a Fiver? How about Fish for Nothing?!

—————————————-

It must be 45 years since I tied rods to the crossbar of a bike to go fishing, but grandson Noah and I think we can do the challenge for £0.  Ten minutes in the compost heap produced plenty of worms, so with minimal tackle, keepnets in a pannier and a rucksack stool, it was a cost-free three and a half miles to a small free pond.

Noah (8) lives a couple of hundred yards from the pond and walked round to meet me.

Rods set up with bright red floats and we were soon fishing. No bites for 40 minutes, then we both caught little roach at the same time. It was a chilly day and fishing was a bit slow, Noah lost what was probably a tench grandad caught another small roach.

Not as many fish as we would have liked, but we both enjoyed completing the Crabtree challenge completely free of cost!
