Gavin Hewitt is, amongst other things, a Man U fan, member of Team Pallatrax and a father of three – and he still manages to get out on the bank. We caught up with him and managed to grab a quick interview. Here’s what he had to say…
How often do you fish and what do you fish for?
I like to get out as much as possible but with a full time career, three children and a girlfriend to take care of, my time on the bank is limited to every other weekend, if I’m lucky, and a few midweek overnighters.
What are your earliest fishing memories? Who taught you?
My father was a keen Carp fisherman, and I tagged along from the age of 9 to watch. I wanted to start Carp fishing, but Dad being Dad, insisted that I learn how to set up and catch smaller fish, look after them and return them safely. I was nearly eleven before I was able to Carp fish, tied all my own rigs etc and one of my most memorable catches was my first Carp, a 10lb 2oz of Mirror Carp from a local estate lake and I thought I was going to be pulled in! That feeling of triumph still appears each time I land a Carp.
Is there anything in fishing that you haven’t done? What are your ambitions?
Of course as a Carp fisherman the larger the fish the better… Not in my opinion. I’ve caught fish to over 50 pounds but still crave a 30 plus fully scaled, or a 40 plus Common in the UK.
What lessons would you pass on to today’s young anglers?
I would give a young angler my time… Why? Because the benefit of others’ experiences were the driving force behind me learning the trade when I was a lad. It is too easy to pick up a magazine these days and think you know it all. Carp fishing is so much more than that and if I could only give one piece of advice it would be to always ensure that you enjoy yourself, because the minute you lose that feeling about catching Carp, you might as well take up golf!
